The Parsons CDT Pub Center

Page history last edited by Michael J 13 years, 10 months ago

Thank you to the Xerox Corporation for their kind support in 2005 and 2006.

Spring 2004 to Dec 2006

The purpose of the Parsons CDT Pub Center was to assist the CDT administration, faculty and students in fulfiling their missions. By using network communications and digital print output to gather and make information useful in a timely way, the Pub Center helps each constituency create more value in less time with less stress with more creative focus.

  • Technical support is supplied by access to the management of the DT lab and their staff of lab technicians.
  • The communication process is managed according to the practice of Communication Process Management and guided by the theory of Communication Ecology.

Output

  • 202 page full color 11 x 9 catalog in 3 weeks for presentation in Bejing.
  • 72 page Canon magazine, a student publication of the Graduate Faculties.
  • 2 200 page 4 by 6 paperbacks for the Chelsea CTE High School collaboration.
  • 80 page 7 by 10 paperback for Milieu, an ongoing magazine/website created by Thomas Jockin, with some mentoring from the Pub Center.

Creating Social Capital

The CDT project room has become a useful center for student project activity.

The standards and practice for a practical network creative workflow was established in the collaboration with students at the New School for Social Research.

A modified version of that workflow was successfully immplemented in Chelsea CTE High School with the collaboration of Thomas Jockin, a junior at Parsons . The result of the collaboration was the production of two editions of student memoirs in the form of 200 page paperbacks. Each book was personalized for each student. The total run was 30 of each book. The turnaround time from finished copy to delivered books was four days.

Using a combination of basecamp, gmail and pbwiki, the production process required less than 2 hours total of face to face meeting time.

Establishing the basis of a number of network collaborations with various activity centers across the University - including the University In House Printing Department, writing students in Graduate Faculties and a Parsons Student Newspaper start up group.

Established a network connection and ongoing conversation between Yousendit.com, Cyrano Project.org, the Good News Project, Exhibition in a Box.
