This section assumes that you've read the intro to communication ecology

Cycle time and observable activity

are the most reliable indicators of the state of a communication ecology. What exactly they indicate, however, critically depends on a granular emprical understanding of the perspectives, interests and focus of the actants in their specific space/times.

Below is a schematic of a general - non space/time specific - model of system behavior. Without being placed in a specific space time contextualized by an understanding of the particular stresses at that state/time it is only a heuristic device, not a description of the real world.

The contention is that input - transformation - output processes are composed of subsystems that are based on i-t-o processes.

Input---->Transformation---->Output---->Stress Reduction----->Wealth
ExternalEnergy____>^Energy^<_____<_____<______<_____________<_____<____
Time.....>..........>................>.........>.........>.......>..........>.....>

Input describes information that is allowed to enter a system, filtered by the system's perspectives.

Transformation is the site where input is turned into output.

Output are the activities of the system.

Stress Reduction can be thought of as the "intent" of system activity.

Stress is the term we use to describe the need for additional energy to continue system activity. Stress increases when activities of local systems are blocked by activites of other local systems. A local system could be an individual, a family, a tribe, a community, a nation state. read more

Energy is taken to mean that which is necessary to do work. For a living system the work is to continue its activity and to implement activity decisions read more

Wealth is taken to mean a measure of the resources having value in terms of use.

For living systems, the wealth measures the available is as a source of energy.read more

Time is an existential reality and therefore an always present constraint on living systems It is a "deep fundamental" of a communication system. read more

Health is a measure of the effectiveness of i-t-o systems.Read more

Sustainable describes a system that creates more energy than it consumes. read more.

Space is an existential reality and therefore an always present constraint on living systems It is a "deep fundamental" of a communication system. read more
