School Counselors: Collaborative Plan

 

According to the data presented in the video

in 2003 the Passing Rate for 9th graders, in period 3 passing rate was about 57% in period 6 it was about 60%

in 2004-5, passing rates went from around 50% in Jan 04 to almost 80% in Jun 05.

How they did it:

School Counselors

Provided counseling services for students with failing grades, cuts,absences social conflicts, etc.

Created an incentive program and distributed certifcates to students with perfect attendance

Deliver career and acadmeic classroom information sessions about the interrelationship between academic performance and future economic opportunities, financil aid and other critical, timely information.

Implemented rewards and distributed certifactes to students based on imporved grades and courses passed.

Developed a program where honor roll students entored or tutor at risk students

Administrators

Created a small learning communityy at Chelsea Technical High School to personalize every student's high school experience

Demonstrated appreciation for the spirit of collaboration involving counselor and reachers

Higher Education

Offered Speech Writing, Sociology, Statis, through College Now program

Deans

Collaborated with counselor in providing resources and supports for at risk students

Enforced the Chelsea attendance policy

Conducted parental conferences for students with chronic cutting

Teachers

Widened the reach of leadership training by expanding the peer helper programs to include peer tutroing and peer mediation

Parent Co-ordinator

Worked with parents of at risk students

Bridged the gap between the teachers and parents, especially those challenged by English Language Skills

Students

Served as mentors to freshman (honor roll students)

Provided support to students who are strugglin

Provided motivation to peers

Shared personal experiences about the consequences of not paying attention to attendance and academics

Social Worker

Collaborated with school counselor to help students at risk of failure and/pr dropping out

Contacted and worked with families of at risk students

Facilitated 9th grade rap sesssins for students at risk of dropping out to help them feel connected and mentored

Community Agency Memebers

Provided partnerships: Morgan Stqanley, Junior ACheivement, Constructions Skills 2000, New York City Transit Authority, Center for Arts Education, Directions for Our Youth, Eyebeam Atelier, New York City Transit Authority and Construction, The Door, City Kids

Attendance Teacher

Monitored attendance and report cuts and long term absences from school
